Hailed as “rebellious” and “creative” (China Daily), composer and performer Fay Wang (Chinese pinyin: Wang Feinan / stage name Fay Kueen) delights in breaking conventions. Raised in Beijing, Wang is now based in New York. Wang’s work spans and draws on a variety of genres, including avant-garde concert music, theater, film, electronic music, Chinese folk music and experimental pop.
Her works are performed internationally in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Australia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and across China and the United States. Musikverlag Doblinger, Vienna publishes Wang’s sheet music. Her debut album was released in China in 2011 and her music has been broadcast on China Central Television, Austrian National Broadcast and WQXR.
Honors and awards include ASCAP Young Composer Award, China’s “Golden Bell” Award, “Governmental Award”, “New Century Cup” Award and “Palatino Cup.” Her numerous commissions include the BOAC’s People Commission Fund (Roger Shapiro Fund for New Music), Hopkins Center for Arts (Andrew W. Mellon Foundation), Classic Euro Young Festival, Shanghai Spring International Music Festival (Shanghai Philharmonic), Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra, MCI of Royal Danish Academy of Music, Beijing Modern Music Festivals, Beijing Dance Academy, the Cantonese Song and Dance Troupe, and Yale Center Beijing. In 2013, Wang was selected to be one of the recipients of the first “China National Arts Fund” and a long-term recipient of “Edifier Musician Foundation”.
Wang has collaborated with many orchestras, ensembles and artists worldwide, including China Philharmonic Orchestra, Bang On A Can All-Stars, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra, Dinosaur Annex, the RIAS Youth Orchestra, Shanghai Quartet, Sinfonia Iuventus, Ensemble De Reihe, China Youth Symphony Orchestra, Lemanic Modern Ensemble, The National Ballet of China Symphony Orchestra, Galatea Quartett, Yale Philharmonic, Amber Quartet, EOS Orchestra, the Pit Stop Players, loadbang, THREE, as well as Danish percussionist Gert Mortensen and New York-based cellist Ashley Bathgate.
Her compositions are performed at various venues including Merkin Concert Hall, Berliner Philharmonie, Arnold Schoenberg Center, Musikverein, Oper Graz, Joseph Haydn-Saal, Geneva’s Centre Culturel Vieux-Moulin, as well as the Flea Theater, Yale Woolsey Hall, Zurich University of the Arts, Royal Danish Academy of Music, Yun Isang Memorial Hall, Beijing Concert Hall, Shanghai Concert Hall, Forbidden City Concert Hall, Tianjin Grand Theatre, Beijing’s National Center for the Performing Arts, and Lincoln Center’s Rose Theater, NYC.
Wang is one of the co-founders of New York based composer/performer ensemble Invisible Anatomy. In collaboration with a number of Yale’s young composers, she served as co-producer and composer on the RiteNow project, a Centennial Celebration of the “Rite of Spring”. Recently Wang also served on the jury for the MEETINGS Composition Competition at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. As an active vocalist, Wang has created a unique Monodrama Series for her own voice, which draws on a variety of social and artistic inspirations both Eastern and Western, as well as from her own experiences as a jazz/rock singer. She also performs in various styles as vocalist for other composers, including Andy Akiho and Chen Yi.
Wang holds degrees from the Central Conservatory of Music (BA ’08) and the Yale School of Music (MM ’10 / AD ‘12) where she received the Ezra Laderman Prize and John Day Jackson Prize. She is currently a DMA candidate at Boston University. Wang has worked with composers including Xiaogang Ye, Martin Bresnick, Ezra Laderman, Christopher Theofanidis, Zhou Long, Chen Yi and Aaron Jay Kernis.
